This international symposium on the science of crystal growth is the first of its kind to be organized by a group of PhD students with financial support from Tohoku University. The topic, dealing with the frontier of crystal growth science, is aimed at providing a common forum for the discussion of a variety of related scientific and technological areas amongst the participants from all over the world.
Crystal growth encompasses a wide variety of interdisciplinary fields, in Earth and planetary sciences, pharmacy, environmental sciences and engineering, industry, semiconductor research, etc. In this symposium, we have chosen Calcium Carbonate as a model crystal to be discussed along with others, mainly because of its familiarity and the wide variety of uses and/or applications: (1) in the design of optical devices, (2) pearls, biomineralizaiton by microbes (bacteria and planktons) in the human body (bone and concretion), (3) carbon dioxide sequestration (in global warming), to name a few.
This symposium is open for all scientists and students. We sincerely hope that this novel approach would provide a challenging and stimulating opportunity for interdisciplinary communication!!Student Organizer : Mihoko Maruyama
